Recent passage of anti-gay laws in Russia
On 18–19 June 2026, leading international experts gathered at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway, for the FCI International Scientific Conference dedicated to one of the most important hereditary orthopaedic disorders in dogs – Elbow Dysplasia (ED).
The conference represented a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) to harmonise screening procedures, classification systems, reporting standards, and breeding recommendations across FCI member countries.
Over two intensive days of scientific presentations, expert discussions, and consensus-building workshops, participants reviewed the latest scientific evidence regarding ED screening, radiographic techniques, CT applications, grading systems, quality assurance, appeal procedures, and international breeding strategies. Particular attention was devoted to the development of a simplified and scientifically robust classification system that can be applied consistently throughout FCI member countries. The discussions reflected years of accumulated scientific knowledge and practical experience from national screening programmes worldwide.
The conference was organised as the culmination of the work of the FCI Elbow Dysplasia Working Group, established to review current practices and propose future standards for international harmonisation.
FCI Elbow Dysplasia Working Group Members:
- Prof. Dr. Nikša Lemo (Chair, Croatia)
- Dr. Aldo Vezzoni (Italy)
- Prof. Dr. Herman A.W. Hazewinkel (The Netherlands)
- Prof. Dr. Mário Ginja (Portugal)
- Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gielen (Belgium)
- Dr. Nele Eley (Germany)
- Prof. Dr. Hege Kippenes Skogmo (Norway)
Scientific Advisors and Observers:
- Prof. Dr. Åke Hedhammar (Sweden)
- Dr. Andrés Villalobos (Mexico)
The FCI extends its sincere gratitude to all speakers, panelists, delegates, national canine organisations, and the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK) for their invaluable contributions. Special thanks are addressed to NMBU for hosting this important event and providing an excellent scientific environment for constructive international collaboration.
The conclusions and recommendations emerging from this conference will contribute to future discussions within the FCI Scientific Commission and FCI General Committee, with the ultimate goal of improving the health, welfare, and genetic management of dogs worldwide.
Through science, collaboration, and international harmonisation, we continue working towards a healthier future for all dogs.
